LONDON BANANAS - Astrid Bin

OPENING JANUARY 8, 2009, AT AUSTIN GALLERY, SHOREDITCH: LONDON BANANAS, A SHOW OF 1000 PORTRAITS OF BANANA SKINS DISCARDED IN LONDON'S URBAN ENVIRONMENT.
Since this project's inception with just over one hundred photos in July 2008, LONDON BANANAS has caused a stir with its continuously growing archive of images of banana skins abandoned on the streets of London. Thrown into corners, dropped in stairwells, on pavements, in roads, and in all manner of unexpected places, LONDON BANANAS has shown the humble banana peel to be an indelible yet overlooked feature in the city's urban landscape.
As a newcomer to the city, London-based artist Astrid Bin kept noticing the litter of skins and began to document them, thereby initiating this project. Soon she had built up a substantial archive of images, presented online at www.londonbananas.com. The archive now boasts nearly 2000 photos, and a selection is available to view on the site. Taking as their starting point the seemingly innocuous but unexpected presence of banana skins around the streets, the situations found are also a collage of London textures, colours, people and weather patterns. A record of the performance of their discovery by the artist, these images mark the places where people were, but are no longer, leaving nothing but the skin as evidence of their presence. The photographs are a street-level view of the London from the abandoned banana's perspective. They are a slapstick comedy moment waiting patiently to happen. They are documentation of our interaction with our shared urban environment. LONDON BANANAS has been widely reviewed, praised, featured and talked about worldwide, from BoingBoing.net to German Vanity Fair to New Zealand radio.
On January 8, 2009, LONDON BANANAS opens at AUSTIN GALLERY, Shoreditch, showcasing 1000 photos from the archive, curated and assembled by the artist. The archive is currently being compiled for a book scheduled for publication in Spring 2009, and a 16-page, limited edition, signed book created especially for the exhibition will be on sale at the venue alongside prints and other ephemeral goodies.
Lu Flux - Old Believer

There are two principal aspects to the Lu Flux philosophy. The more sobering of the two is the way of the disposable world and all of Lu's garments are an affirmation of sartorial splendour against the mass production within it. It is to create something new out of something old, to reduce waste and consume less. The lighter side is that the clothing is intended to make you smile as Lu revels in the follies of modern life and wants her creations to reflect the absurdity.

Lu's show runs until 6pm, Sunday 9th November.

Wandering Geese

"Wandering Geese" is an exhibition showcasing the work of Laxmi Nicolas and Dafna Steinberg. The theme of their work is the feminine appropriation of urban space.
The idea for this exhibition started out one day on a walk. It was an idea that planted itself into the minds and works of the two participating artists. Gradually, it grew into a study of women in the city and both artists (being women themselves) began to have conversations on how they felt about being women living in a city. It became a constant discussion of roles, attitudes and perceptions as they deconstructed stereotypes, questioned social normativity and searched for the feminine in the everyday life of the urban environment.

During this search, they came across the Crossbones Cemetery. Located in the Southbank of London, Crossbones was the burial ground for "single women" (prostitutes) that was closed in the mid 1800s. The location is currently in a dispute between real estate developers and a group of local residents who would like to create an official memorial for the women buried there. The residents have already made their own unofficial memorial by placing homemade placards, flowers, personal notes and ribbons all over the front gates that were put up to prevent people from entering the grounds. Seeing this dedication to women who died "wandering" the urban streets touched the two artists and they decided to create their own memorial through collaborative pieces, which are also part of this exhibition.

Julian Aggrey Exhibition

Julian Aggrey's first solo oil painting exhibition, Dark Shines in Austin from 03-06-08 until 15-06-08.
Open til 9pm on Thursdays.
